Science

Our main aims in teaching Science at St. Mark’s are to enable children to:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the different types of science enquiries – observing changes over a period of time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things, carrying out simple comparative tests and finding things out using secondary sources of information.
  • obtain the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

'KS1 Science topics are planned on a 2 year cycle. 2018-19 is the A year of the cycle.

KS2 Science topics are planned on a 4 year cycle. 2018-19 is the first year of the cycle.

At St Mark's we have some mixed year classes. This way of planning means that children should not miss Science topics, or repeat topics, over the course of their time at St Mark's.

Topics plans are adapted by class teachers so as to be accessible to the age group. There are differentiated objectives for each year group for Working scientifically.
